Russian: from the Late Greek name Makarios, a derivative of makaros blessed. This was a very popular name among early Christians, and was borne by a large number of saints, among them Macarius the Elder (c.300–90) and Macarius the Younger (d. c.408), both of whom lived in Egypt, and a 4th-century bishop of Jerusalem who identified the True Cross found by St Helena. Another St Macarius (d. c.350) was originally name Arius, but has been renamed in order to distinguish him from the founder of the Arian heresy, which he strongly opposed.
